{"id":2198,"date":"2022-04-06T15:34:05","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T15:34:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robbtax.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2198"},"modified":"2022-04-06T15:34:24","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T15:34:24","slug":"bank-campaign-launched-as-businesses-baffled-by-carbon-jargon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robbtax.co.uk\/blog\/bank-campaign-launched-as-businesses-baffled-by-carbon-jargon\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank campaign launched as businesses baffled by carbon jargon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The British Business Bank has launched a campaign to alert and encourage SMEs to make the most of the commercial benefits of investing in decarbonisation.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The bank\u2019s #GreenToGrow campaign includes a new \u2018Green Decoder\u2019, an online guide co-created with Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University,\u00a0to help smaller businesses decipher the terminology surrounding decarbonisation.<\/p>\n<p>Research commissioned by the bank shows that the majority of these SMEs don\u2019t understand \u2018carbon jargon\u2019 with \u00a0three in four (74 per cent) baffled about how common environmental terms such as \u2018net zero\u2019, \u2018carbon neutral\u2019 and \u2018carbon footprint\u2019 apply to their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The Opinium survey of 1,000 senior decision makers in smaller businesses found more than half (54 per cent) believe the language, terminology and information around carbon emissions reduction are overcomplex.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Carbon jargon\u2019 terms misunderstood by businesses include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greenhouse gas emissions:\u00a087 per cent of businesses did not have a full understanding of the term and what it meant for their business<\/li>\n<li>Decarbonisation:\u00a078 per cent<\/li>\n<li>Net zero:\u00a074 per cent<\/li>\n<li>Carbon neutral:\u00a069 per cent<\/li>\n<li>Carbon footprint:\u00a059 per cent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sixty-one per cent say they would find more information and advice about taking action to measure and reduce their business\u2019 carbon emissions helpful, with over half (53 per cent) of those wanting advice on measuring their business\u2019 carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>A similar number wanted information to help work out if reducing carbon emissions makes financial sense for their business.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-four per cent don\u2019t know where to get information on reducing their carbon emissions and how best to approach related commercial or financial opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The British Business Bank\u2019s online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/finance-hub\/business-guidance\/sustainability\/?utm_source=press&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=SME_green_to_grow&amp;utm_content=press_release\">Finance Hub<\/a>\u00a0also provides a series of guides and information about sustainability issues and how smaller businesses can start their journey towards net zero.<\/p>\n<p>Shanika Amarasekara, Chief Impact Officer, British Business Bank, said:\u00a0\u201cBy helping decipher some of the terminology around decarbonisation the British Business Bank hopes to show smaller businesses that simple, incremental changes, such as switching off equipment when not in use can make a difference in their net zero transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will become an increasingly important businesses requirement.
